CENTRE FOR SHELLFISH RESEARCH FIELD FACILITY BUSINESS PLAN

The Centre for Shellfish Research was recently established at Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Its mission, to create wealth from knowledge, is leading the innovative development of multi-disciplinary research and development services to support a sustainable and competitive shellfish aquaculture industry. A Field Facility dedicated to research, technology transfer, industry training and public education is critically needed.

The project team provided the business plan for this important facility. The project consisted of five primary objectives.

• Analysis of the organization and operation of comparable facilities on a global basis.
• Articulation of the organizational and management structure.
• Development of the operational framework including product and service. delivery, competitive analysis, mission and objectives, and operational policies.
• Provision of a development plan for the site and facilities.
• Development of a complete five-year financial plan.

The Field Facility has subsequently been successful in obtaining development funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Government of British Columbia.
