GEODUCK HARVEST

Our team was retained by the BC Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries to make recommendations for the development of new polices regarding the harvest of cultured geoducks. This project required consultation with wild fishery, aquaculture and regulatory stakeholders. A draft was reviewed in a well-attended stakeholder meeting in June of 2004.

A final report providing policy recommendations has subsequently been completed. This document outlines the current issue relating to management of the geoduck fishery and risks due to poaching and laundering and a range of solutions which protects the interests of wild stock managers and fishery licence holders while allowing the competitive development of the geoduck culture industry. Since this issue must be considered in the larger context of trends within seafood and aquaculture traceability as well and extensive review of traceability is provided.
