PROFILE AND POTENTIAL OF THE BC SHELLFISH AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY 2002

Our consulting team was contracted by the Vancouver Island Economic Developers Association (VIEDA) in the spring of 2002 to conduct a literature review of existing documents to develop a comprehensive profile of the current shellfish aquaculture industry in BC. The goal of this profile was to provide a clear picture of what the industry looks like in 2002y, how it is structured, what the potential is for future growth, as well as what barriers are currently impacting expansion and competitiveness.

The resulting industry synopsis document detailed a vision for the BC shellfish industry entitled "50 in 5" illustrating what a $50 million dollar BC industry would look like and the rate of growth required to attain this over 5 years. This document has been used by VIEDA as part of the planning for the Marine Frontiers initiative.
