Aquaculture Research
Shellfish Monitoring Project Phase III
Project Description: To provide development and implementation priority pilot projects that would enable increase in service levels and/or decrease in costs related to shellfish monitoring programs: 1) Evaluation of a Farm Based HACCP Program; 2) Use of Commercial Species as Indicator Species for Biotoxin Monitoring.
Alternate Marine Biotoxin Technologies Investigation
Project Description: A project to explore the potential future use of the MIST Alert rapid screening test for Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning in field settings and in a regulatory laboratory situation.

Investigation of Techniques for Culture of Pacific Oysters in Hi-Flow Aquatech Grow-Out Trays
Project Description: To investigate husbandry methods which affect growth characteristics of Pacific Oysters in Hi-Flow Aquatech oyster culture trays at four sites in British Columbia. Results of this project will be to develop a Standard Operating Practice to optimize use of these trays by shellfish aquaculturists.
Investigation of optimal Manila Clam seeding techniques: Economic and culture considerations for British Columbia Manila clam aquaculture.
Project Description: Conduct industry research on Manila clam nursery and rearing techniques on project sponsored by Science Council of British Columbia
Biophysical criteria for shellfish culture in British Columbia: A site capability evaluation system
Project Description: Research and review of species requirements and habitat suitability models for development of a site capability evaluation system to assess biophysical capability of marine areas to support shellfish aquaculture.
Review of status of aquaculture in Pacific Region and associated environmental impacts
Project Description: Research and writing assistance on summary review of Pacific Region aquaculture for current and potential species including known and potential environmental impacts.
Aquaculture Development
Shoal Islands Economic Development Initiative
Project Description: Develop a strategy and business plan for economic development of intertidal resources, integrating aquaculture development, wild fisheries management and upland water quality remediation. Assist in the planning, preparation and construction of initial phases of Manila clam farming operations and water quality remediation efforts.
Kelp aquaculture Feasibility Investigation
Project Description: Identify grow-out techniques for Macrocystis integrifolia, investigate the feasibility of a wild marine plant harvest business, and explore the feasibility of culturing and processing marine plants in territory.
Tsimshian Shellfish Aquaculture Development Initiative./ Central Coast & Haida Gwaii Shellfish Aquaculture Development Initiative
Project Description: Establish first stage shellfish farms in 10 First Nation communities in in Central, Northern BC and Haida Gwaii and use these sites to test a variety of shellfish species and growing techniques, train community members and educate community at large about shellfish aquaculture. Data gained in grow-out studies used to facilitate feasibility study for regional shellfish economic development approach involving 12 First Nations. Conducted community and regional meetings and facilitated dialogue between communities as part of project team including Ecotrust Canada(Environmental NGO), Prince Rupert Economic Development Commission, North Coast Water Quality and Biotoxin Society, and regional First Nations Associations.
Hul’qumi’num Shellfish Aquaculture Development Phase I, II
Project Description: Identify shellfish aquaculture opportunities within Hul’qumi’num Treaty Group traditional territory and develop those opportunities into successful and sustainable economic enterprises. The project was divided into two distinct areas of undertaking. Phase I consisted of the identification and assessment of potential sites within HTG territory. Phase II consisted of the assessment of economic potential and business opportunities for shellfish aquaculture within HTG territories.

Project Description: Background research, international review of related facilities, prepare business plan, development strategy, consultation strategy and marine site applications for field research and training farm for Centre for Shellfish Research.
First Nations Shellfish Aquaculture Regional Business Strategy, BC Central and North Coast.
Project Description: Developing a strategy and framework for First Nations hellfish aquaculture on the Central and North Coasts that will assist in the development of economic measures to support First Nations' entry into the shellfish farming industry along the coast.
Malaspina University-College Centre for Shellfish Research
Project Description: Assistance in organization and initiation of the Centre for Shellfish Research (CSR) in the Fisheries and Aquaculture program of Malaspina University College in Nanaimo, BC. Facilitated and prepared proceedings of planning workshops.
Profile and Potential of the BC Shellfish Aquaculture Industry 2002.
Project Description: Developing a strategy and framework for First Nations shellfish aquaculture on the Central and North Coasts that will assist in the development of economic measures to support First Nations' entry into the shellfish farming industry along the coast.
Shellfish Processing Plant QMP Plan development
Project Description: Developed Quality Management Plans for two new shellfish processing plants on Vancouver Island incorporating HACCP for review and approval by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency prior to plant certification.
Review of Alaska Native Corporation Oyster Culture Enterprise
Project Description: Management and financial review of Alaska Native Corporation oyster culture enterprise. Provided recommendations for future development and husbandry practices and conducted farm manager and site personnel training.
Valuation of BC Shellfish Farming Corporations.
Project Description: Valuation of corporation and assets of a major BC Shellfish Farming Corporation as a numer of smaller operations. (confidential)
Quality Assurance project for BC Shellfish Culture industry.
Project Description: Conduct survey of quality assurance practices in BC Shellfish culture industry and prepared manual for distribution to industry.
Communications
Meeting and workshop facilitation are activities undertaken by BRC staff as a regular part of most projects. Examples include:
- 2004 Geoduck Chain of Custody Workshop. This workshop was attended by a large group of industry and government stakeholders with a wide range of persepctives and ideas. Common ground and general agreement was achieved.
- 2002 BC Shellfish Code of Practice Project. At each community meeting, stakeholders with divergent perspectives were in attendance. Diplomacy and tact combined with the ability to maintain the direction and stability of the meeting - were required to ensure a successful final outcome.
- 2002 Shellfish-Visioning workshop sponsored by the Centre for Shellfish Research (CSR), Malaspina University College.
Maritime Salmon Project
Project Description: Developed up-to-date, accurate and professional communication material that addresses the many benefits and positive contributions of the salmon farming industries in New Brunswick.
HR Training Capacity for BC Seafood Sector
Facilitated one day-workshop and developed follow up action plan for the BC Seafood harvesting, culture & processing sector
SMP Communications Project
Canadian Shellfish Quality Resource - A communications strategy around the Shellfish Monitoring Project that kept stakeholders aware of the work being carried out and conducted a review of communications between government and CSSP related stakeholders.

Shellfish Culture and Particulate Matter Production and Cycling Field Program
Project Description: Field management and technician services operating MU-C research vessel on comprehensive research program into the environmental interactions of suspended shellfish aquaculture focusing on particulate matter production and cycling. Benthic surveys and environmental monitoring at two commercial shellfish operations. Input into design and modifications of new research vessel before and after first cruises.
State of the Marine Resources in Hul’qumi’num Territory
Project Description: Conducting detailed marine surveys and inventories of marine resources within the territories of the Hul’qumi’num Treaty Group member nations.

Project Description: Conduct field work and analysis for shellfish culture capability assessments during the summer of 2003 in Checleset Bay Region.

Water Quality
Supporting community shellfisheries and aquaculture in Barkley and Clayoquot Sounds: stakeholder participation in shellfish sanitation monitoring and investigation.
Project Description: Develop and conduct an in-depth study of the factors that influence sanitary quality of shellfish growing waters in Barkley and Clayoquot Sounds on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Seafood Traceability in BC – Assessing State of Readiness
Project Description: Assist in project to provide an assessment of the requirements, current conditions and opportunities for seafood traceability in the British Columbia commercial seafood sector.
British Columbia Geoduck Aquaculture Traceability Policy
Project Description: Consulted, facilitated dialogue and prepared draft policy recommendations for solutions to issues regarding chain of custody for farmed geoducks chain of custody solutions.
Analysis of the Zoning Bylaws For Shellfish Aquaculture and Assessment of their Economic Impact: Cortes Island, Area I, Regional District of Comox-Strathcona
Project Description: Research and writing on the implications and impacts of current and proposed aquaculture bylaws of the Regional District of Comox-Strathcona (RDCS) affecting deep-water shellfish farms in Gorge Harbour of Cortes Island, Area “I”.
BCMAFF SWOT – BC Seafood and Recreational Fishing
Project Description: Research and writing to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the BC seafood and tidal recreational fishing sectors focusing on aquaculture sector.
Development of Mandatory Shellfish Aquaculture Code of Practice for the BC Shellfish Industry
Project Description: The BCSGA Code of Practice (COP) was used as a baseline, and then consultations with regulatory agencies, shellfish farmers, marine users, communities and other stakeholders were conducted to revise and further refine the Code.
On Farm Food Safety Programs in the Canadian Aquaculture Industry: Discussion document
Project Description: Investigate the hazards associated with farming of salmon, haddock, cod, halibut, trout, tilapia, oysters, mussels and clams to determine if it is possible to develop generic models for an on-farm food safety system based on three key subjects: Molluscan shellfish, Marine finfish and Fresh Water finfish.

Project Description: Undertaking consultation with the BCSGA members as to the specific problems and needs which they have with respect to management of shellfish monitoring programs and suggested changes or modifications to the system. Provide overview of the future expected demands and challenges for the responsible regulatory agencies based on expected future shellfish farming industry growth and development.

Project Description: Prepare a strategy document for development of shellfish aquaculture training programs and curriculum.

Project Description: Provide shellfish aquaculture training through Malaspina University-College and Kingzett Professional Services to one specific client who initiated this request. Training allowed client to gain necessary skills and experience to undertake a shellfish farming business or find employment in the shellfish culture industry.

Project Description: Conducted a review of environmental effects of shellfish culture activities as practiced in British Columbia and identified draft best management practices for avoiding HADDs to fish habitat. Draft Operational Statements produced.

Assessment of intertidal clam population surveys at Seal Island, British Columbia, 1940-1992.
Project Description: Summary and analysis of 50-year historical commercial clam database from population surveys conducted at Seal Island (Strait of Georgia). Provide preliminary information on growth and yield per recruit relationships for Butter Clams. Review sampling strategies and make recommendations for future surveys.
